It’s the acceleration that gets you. Consciousness itself can be benign, when you’re a rock, or a tree, or even a bear. But when you get up to human speeds, the self-reflectivity kicks in, and everyone suddenly has a problem.

Do not bother trying to survive. That is a fool’s errand in the best of times, and these are not the best of times. The Earth will crush us now, because of our disrespect. It won’t take very long and it won’t be hard for Her to do. (The Earth is a female deity, we assert!) Her power is beyond the enfeebled imagination of those who have deluded themselves that humans are the lords of all. They’ll wise up soon enough.

Here, we look at the disaster and try to understand what it means. What does the tragedy of history tell us about humans? About God? About the astonishing and dangerous activity of our fevered minds? Is there a way to make words suffice on the precipice of a screaming descent into silence?

We shall see!
